Mark Jaramilla is from Beta Chapter and is an avid cyclist. He, along with other brothers, is at the forefront of organizing bike-riding events entitled ~~Tour de XPO~~ Tour ng XPO to promote "non-competitive and socially engaging" activities. Currently held within the San Francisco Bay Area, they hope to expand these events to other chapters across California.

Tour De XPO - A Brief History:

In June, #121 Elmer Dispo, #136 Noel Cayago, #148 Hervey Herrera, #274 Kevin Bernadino, and I trekked out on bicycles to Golden Gate Park to enjoy a sunny day in San Francisco. We tossed around some ideas about making this an annual event and eventually came to the conclusion that an event like this should not be limited to just XPOs. So after some deliberation, we recently held the inaugural Tour De XPO on July 13th, 2009. #178 Larry Guinto, along with a friend, and my sister Gen, joined us to a trip to the Golden Gate Bridge. Invites went out via Facebook and Twitter, but for some reason I failed to get the word out on the XPO mass email. My apologies and I meant no offense. Tomorrow [August 23, 2009], we'll be hosting Tour De XPO again and out destination will be City Hall.

Why Tour De XPO

With the recent interest in cycling and cycling events, a title was needed to coin a simple, yet appealing, name for the event. Tour of California and Tour De France are both popular events that everyone is familiar with. With the title "Tour De XPO", I felt that this event could be held and applied to any active chapter. Imagine a Tour De XPO: San Diego or Tour De XPO: Sacramento! The idea was not to keep this event securely for Beta but to share the format with all chapters. So if you wish to "borrow" the idea, by all means do so. Since it's XPO, it's technically yours!

There has also been some concerns about health and lack of activities within our brotherhood. It was our hope to engage this issue head on with a non-competitive and socially engaging program: Cycling has proven to be a healthy form of recreation and creates a form of comradery, while allowing an individual to accomplish personal goals. By no means is this a race. Nobody gets left behind, just like our brotherhood. All we ask from participants is that you don't give up and we ride out on time!

How is Cycling related to XPO?

Ever heard of Tour of Luzon?? How about the Marlboro Tour?? Its most current title is Padyak Pinoy (aka Tour of the Philippines or Tour ng Pilipinas), which is a competitive race held annually in the Philippines. Pilipinos has had interest in cycling since the 1950's and even today remain competitive in the cycling world, i.e. Nino Surban - 1st Place Winner of the ASEAN Mountain Bike Championship 2009, Padyak Pinoy 2009 champion Joel Calderon, Liquigaz-LPGMA Tour of Luzon winner Mark Guevarra, and Lloyd Lucien Reynante, the overall individual runner-up in the Padyak Pinoy and Tour Luzon. These riders are representing the Philippines at this very moment! XPO has the opportunity to be at the forefront and foster a bicycle community within our already existing FilAm community! The real question is, why not??

Who can join Tour De XPO

Anybody can join Tour de XPO! Though it would be possible to arrange XPO-Only rides, I believe this is our chance to show everyone our support for a greener, healthier society. To limit ourselves from exposure to an already established cycling community would only deter our learning and network capacity. So brothers, potential brothers, friends, and family are all welcome! *Currently pending is the Tour De XPO Event Waiver Form.

Gawad Kalinga

As a fraternity we are proud and thankful to have a house and a home but we realize there are so many people out there who are not as fortunate as us. So it is a goal for the Brothers of CHI RHO OMICRON to build a house in the Philippines for the underprivileged by raising money and donating it to Gawad Kalinga.

What is Gawad Kalinga?

Gawad Kalinga (GK) translated in English means to "to give care", and it is an alternative solution to the blatant problem of poverty not just in the Philippines but in the world. GK's vision for the Philippines is a slum-free nation through a simple strategy of providing land for the landless, homes for the homeless, food for the hungry and as a result providing dignity and peace for those in need.

Gawad Kalinga is more than about building houses for the poorest of the poor. Providing a decent home is just the beginning of the transformation of the people and the community.

Our goal is to raise $1800 to build a house for the less fortunate in the Metro Manila area in the Philippines and turn that money over to Gawad Kalinga. Using their contractors, materials and connections this small $1800 donation can build a home for a family of four! In December 2008, it was estimated that 8.1 million Filipinos lived in Slums or "squatter homes" (self constructed shelters made from scrap metal and other available resources). Please help XPO and do your part to give someone a place to live and a home to call their own.

The House of Representatives is close to bringing Filipino WWII veterans legislation to the floor for a vote (as part of the Veterans Benefits Enhancement Act), but your help is needed to make sure that when this happens, we will EMERGE VICTORIOUS!

· Nationals from more than 60 other countries who also served under U.S. command during WWII received U.S. veteran status- Filipinos were singled out for discriminatory treatment.

Dear Representative:

We are writing to request your support for the Veterans Benefits Enhancement Act which includes provisions to restore veterans status to Filipino WWII veterans. Time is running out for this bill, and we strongly urge your leadership on this important issue.

On April 24, the Senate voted to pass this bill (S. 1315) by the overwhelming bipartisan vote of 96-1 and it is time for the House to follow suit. This bill is of UTMOST IMPORTANCE to our community and we call on you to support this bill in its current form and to vote for it when it comes to a floor vote. We strongly urge you to oppose any efforts to weaken the provisions of the bill.

Out of the original 250,000 Filipino soldiers originally called to serve, there are only 18,000 veterans left, and the time is now to rectify the 62-year injustice done to these few brave soldiers. We call on you to restore full equity to our veterans so that they can live out their remaining years with the full measure of honor befitting their service to this country.

*"US SENATE PASSES VETERANS BENEFITS FOR FILIPINO VETERANS 96-1"*

*San Francisco** CA*- The US Senate began deliberation on S.1315 on April
22, 2008 and today, with a vote of 96-1, the bill was finally passed. This
bill is generally an omnibus bill enhancing benefits to most US veterans.
The provision of S.57 was partly incorporated in S. 1315 which will afford
the Filipino veterans in the US to receive the same benefits as those of
their US veteran counterpart. Those who are residing in the Philippines
shall receive a monthly special pension of $300/month if the bill is finally
signed into law.

"We would like to thank the leadership of the Senators Inouye and Senator
Akaka for making it a possibility for this bill to pass. This is our long
awaited desire to be recognized for all our sacrifices during World War II,"
said veteran Baldonado, SF Commissioner and VEC board member.

Senator Inouye reminded legislators, in his very emotional speech today
,about the bravery of Filipino soldiers during the Bataan Death March.
According to Inouye, "for their courage and contributions during World War
II the Filipino veterans deserve to live in dignity and that passing the
bill shall restore their honor."

Calling the Filipino veterans benefit as a costly provision, Senator Richard
Burr from North Carolina strongly opposed the provision giving benefits to
the Filipino veterans. His amendment was rejected by a majority vote of
56-41.

Senator Akaka (D-HI), Chair of the Senate Veterans Affairs Committee had
shown full support not only to the Filipino veterans but to all US war
veterans. He said that the "passage of S. 1315 is about honor and is the
right thing to do. This is America's moral obligation. No fellow warrior
shall be left behind."

The original 200,000 Filipino World War II veterans who fought side by side
with the US veterans are now mostly octogenarians and barely 18,000 are
alive. For more than half a century, the Filipino World War II veterans
have been seeking for just and equal recognition as US veterans. The house
bill HR 760 should continue to gain support from legislators in the House
with the passage of S. 1315 in Senate. The San Francisco Veterans Equity
Center with other veterans advocacy group shall aggressively continue to
work for the passage of these veterans bill until it is finally signed into

A Great Hero of Our Time

August 27th, 2007. Bill was a great activist fighting for various minority groups. The work he
is most remembered for is his struggle to bring back the I-Hotel. The I-hotel stands today as
